Taught MSc in English Language

Applications are now being accepted for the academic year *2010-2011*

English is the world's one real global language, with a rich history and great social and geographical variation. This programme offers an intensive course in key aspects of the linguistics of English for those who have not hitherto had the opportunity for such in-depth study (so entry requirements include a good first degree in a broadly relevant discipline, for example, any Language, or English Literature, or History). The MSc focuses initially on the structure of English and then offers option courses on aspects of the history of English, on current varieties of the language and on a number of approaches to the study of English.

We believe that the programme offers one of the most comprehensive range of opportunities available anywhere in the world for the detailed study of the English Language at postgraduate level. The University has long had an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching in the linguistic study of English, and library facilities are excellent in this area. The MSc can function either as a stand-alone Master's qualification, or as a basis for further postgraduate study (typically at PhD level).

The major aims of the course are thus:

  • to offer students tuition in the key areas of the study of the structure of the language: phonology, syntax and semantics (with other areas available as option courses)
  • to offer students a variety of optional courses relating to aspects of the study of English in the modern period (including courses which focus on non-standard varieties) and to aspects of the study of stages in the historical development of the language
  • to equip students with the knowledge and expertise for advanced research into English Language, both at this level and for possible use in pursuit of a higher research degree, while also meeting the requirements of graduates who wish to further their understanding of the English Language but are not committed to research careers

Modes of study: the programme is available in both full-time mode, over 12 months, and part-time mode, over 24 months.

NB: if applicants already have a good academic background in English Language (for example, if they have studied the subject, or a closely related subject such as Linguistics, at undergraduate level) we typically recommend that they take an MSc by Research in English Language, rather than this taught MSc. Please contact either the taught MSc Programme Director or the MSc by Research Programme Director if you have any queries about this.
