Anaphor Binding in Korean

It has been proposed that there are two types of constraints on anaphor binding in various languages. These are syntactic and discourse (or pragmatic) constraints as proposed by Reinhart and Reuland (1991, 1993), Iida (1992, 1996), Pollard and Sag (1994). Korean anaphor,'Caki (self)' , as one of the well known long distant anaphors, has received such a dichotomous approach between syntactic and discourse constraints. In this talk, however, I will propose that a close examination of Korean anaphors show that neither syntactic nor pragmatic constraints provide an adequate account for Korean data.

This talk will briefly introduce the Korean data and HPSG binding theory, which will be followed by looking at some approaches proposed for exempted anaphors. Then we will move onto the examination of Korean anaphors, by which I will propose that Korean anapors should rather need a pure syntactic constraints.
